What Fascia and Soffit Boards Actually Do

The fascia board is the vertical board that closes the rafter ends at the eaves — it is what the guttering brackets are fixed to. The soffit is the horizontal board that runs from the fascia back to the wall, closing the underside of the eaves. Together they perform three functions: they close the eaves space against birds, bats, and rain; they support the guttering; and they protect the rafter feet from direct weather exposure.

When fascia boards fail — typically through rot at the back edge where moisture accumulates behind the gutter — the rafter feet they protect are exposed to direct water contact. Rafter foot rot, where it occurs, is discovered when the fascia is removed for replacement. It is one of the most common additional costs in a Bath fascia replacement job.

The rot typically extends further than the visible paint failure suggests — by the time paint fails, the timber beneath it has often been compromised for 2 to 5 years.
